Creating a more diverse and local culture of fashion
We envision a more authentic & empathetic fashion culture that is based on local resources, collaboration, resiliency and well-being.
This new narrative starts with us.
We are an open collective in search of a new kind of local and sincerely sustainable fashion culture. The limits of the planetary resources are pressing and we are acting out of urgency and emergency: the time for empty talk, endless compromising and green-washing are already wasted. We exist because we believe that the new fashion economy will be more local, de-centralised, resourceful and it starts with the people (consumers and fashion producers) who want to turn the system over.
The path to the new state of fashion isn’t easy, but we are committed. Our message isn’t one of despair but of empowerment; we want to cultivate meaningfulness in the way we use the resources around us and leverage the sharing of knowledge and skills.
SEAMS was started in 2015 as a registered association (Kestävä Muoti ry.) and we have organised sewing workshops for anybody interested in picking up new skills. We have gotten massively encouraging feedback and are excited to explore new ways to further the project.
The current crisis can be a once in a lifetime chance to build new, honestly sustainable economies. In 2019, almost 100 billion pieces of the garment were produced. Some estimates say even 20% of it was never worn once. Millions of tons of textile waste are sent to landfill yearly. The era of hyperactivity and mindless consumerism must now be last season.
SEAMS is only starting to take its form. We invite consumers, users, prosumers and fashion professionals to take part. In the coming months, we will be organising workshops and events and initiating discussions in the arena. We’re moving organically and want to test ideas together with the users and the producers.
We invite you to join us in the making of the needed change.
